Moving beyond Operations: Leveraging Big Data for Urban Planning Decisions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Big data is here: urban infrastructure systems are being instrumented to provide continuous reports on their performance; buildings are monitoring and reporting occupancy and energy use; distributed water and air quality sensors are providing real time information on dozens of environmental parameters. Cell phone location data is providing a detailed view of the activity patterns for millions of urban residents. However, when the utility of big data is discussed almost all of the examples provided are short-term management applications. There are very few examples of big data being used in long range planning. This paper discusses why big data is particularly well suited to short term management applications and identifies the factors that have limited its use for longer range planning. This paper also provides examples of how big data can be abstracted in ways that are useful for long range planning, and how these uses differ from the short-term management applications that are so commonly discussed. _______________________________________________________ S. Big Data and Urban Informatics: Innovations and Challenges to Urban Planning and Knowledge Discovery
Big Data is the term being used to describe a wide spectrum of observational or “naturally-occurring” data generated through transactional, operational, planning and social activities that are not specifically designed for research. Due to the structure and access conditions associated with such data, research and analysis using such data becomes significantly complicated. New sources of Big Da...
متن کاملHow to use Big Data technologies to optimize operations in Upstream Petroleum Industry
Big Data is the oil of the new economy” is the most famous citation during the three last years. It has even been adopted by the World Economic Forum in 2011. In fact, Big Data is like crude! It’s valuable, but if unrefined it cannot be used. It must be broken down, analyzed for it to have value. But what about Big Data generated by the Petroleum Industry and particularly its upstream segment? ...
متن کاملLeveraging Big Data and Business Analytics
F ueled by the growing popularity of social media, e-commerce, and an increased interest in business collaboration, there’s been an explosion of data. However, enterprises don’t always know how to use this “big data” to make (or automate) complex decisions, resulting in a business advantage. Powerful analytics techniques can help enterprises deal with complex decisions by providing new insights...
متن کاملCase Studies for Data-Oriented Emergency Management/Planning in Complex Urban Systems
To reduce the losses caused by natural disasters such as hurricanes, it is necessary to build effective and efficient emergency management/planning systems for cities. With increases in volume, variety and acquisition rate of urban data, major opportunities exist to implement data-oriented emergency management/planning. New York/New Jersey metropolitan area is selected as the study area. Large ...
متن کاملThe Uses of Big Data in Cities.
There is much enthusiasm currently about the possibilities created by new and more extensive sources of data to better understand and manage cities. Here, I explore how big data can be useful in urban planning by formalizing the planning process as a general computational problem. I show that, under general conditions, new sources of data coordinated with urban policy can be applied following f...
